NEW YORK (AP) - President Barack Obama has signed a bill renaming a Bronx post office in honor of the late New York Congressman Herman Badillo.

Members of New York’s congressional delegation passed the bill earlier this month to rename the Morrisania Post Office to the Herman Badillo Post Office Building.

Obama made it official on Monday.

Badillo represented the South Bronx for seven years and was the first congressman born in Puerto Rico. He also served as Bronx borough president and as a deputy mayor in New York City.

Badillo died in December 2014 following complications from congestive heart failure. He was 85.

The post office was built in 1936. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
