RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A legal battle between the dog rescue organization at Michael Vick’s former dogfighting compound and Surry County’s animal control officer has been settled.

Dogs Deserve Better Inc. claimed in the lawsuit that Surry County authorities illegally seized a pit bull terrier from the organization and charged its founder with animal cruelty and failure to provide adequate care to a companion animal. The charges were ultimately dropped and the dog returned after a judge found no evidence of abuse or neglect.

A federal judge in Richmond filed a brief order Wednesday dismissing the lawsuit at the request of both parties. Lawyers for both sides said terms of the settlement are confidential.

The lawsuit sought unspecified monetary damages. The judge’s order says each side will pay its own costs.
