NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans police say they are investigating a report that a man disappeared while swimming in the Mississippi River near the French quarter.

A police news release says a man walking along the river spotted two males swimming in the river Tuesday night. One got out of the water and walked away with a woman. The other swimmer disappeared in the water.

Witnesses said clothes and a phone found at the edge of the river belonged to the man who disappeared.

Police believe the items belonged to 42-year-old Dave Hebron. Hebron’s mother told police that he had been staying at a homeless shelter after traveling to New Orleans from Jena.

The New Orleans Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and New Orleans Harbor Police are assisting in the search.
