DEVILLE, La. (AP) - A Deville mother has been accused of reporting an attempted kidnapping that deputies say never happened.

Multiple media outlets report that 24-year-old Ashley Ballard had called the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning, saying four men had knocked her down and kidnapped her 2-year-old child.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Tommy Carnline says Ballard said she grabbed her other two children and gave chase, finding the toddler crying in a ditch.

Carnline says Ballard gave inconsistent statements to investigators during questioning, leading authorities to determine that the incident never occurred. Ballard was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report later that day.

Carnline says Ballard’s children are with family members.

Jail records do not indicate if Ballard, who has been released on bond, has an attorney.
