SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A woman faces multiple counts of forgery after police in South Burlington accused her of paying for items with bank checks linked to a stolen purse.

Police said a woman had been coming into a store paying for items with the checks and then attempting to return the items for cash almost immediately. Investigators determined the checks were linked to a purse stolen from Colchester recently.

The woman identified herself as 27-year-old Stacie Manning of Jericho. Police said her ID didn’t match the name on the checks.

Manning was arrested Tuesday and faced arraignment Wednesday. It wasn’t immediately known if she had a lawyer; a phone message was left seeking comment. Police said Manning also is being investigated in cases in Williston and Essex.

She’s been charged with 38 counts of forgery, among other charges.
