TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - The Tupelo Buffalo Park has gained a new set of stripes with the birth of a baby zebra.

Park officials tell the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/1VN9j3d ) the mother gave birth Tuesday.

They say the mother is still too protective for park workers to assess the gender of the newborn, but the park will hold its customary naming contest over the next few weeks.

Zebras at the park are plains zebra, also known as the common zebra, and are native to an area from southern Ethiopia across East Africa, as well as south toward Botswana. They are a highly social species common to parks and game reserves.

The newest addition brings to 12 zebras who call the Buffalo Park home.
