PETAL, Miss. (AP) - Petal Mayor Hal Marx has vetoed a new ordinance that makes vaping illegal in public buildings.

The board of aldermen voted last month to amend the current ordinance against smoking in public places to include devices such as electronic cigarettes and similar devices.

Five of the seven aldermen could override such a veto. The Hattiesburg American reports (https://hatne.ws/1en9qAQ ) aldermen will meet July 7.

Marx has said business owners should be able to decide whether to ban e-cigarettes.

Alderman Brad Amacker has said the city already bans tobacco cigarettes so it only seemed prudent to update the ordinance to reflect current smoking devices.
