PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A former police officer accused of stealing prescription medication from a pharmacy has been indicted by an Autauga County grand jury.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange said in a statement that 46-year-old John Wayne McDaniel Jr. is charged with theft, possession of a controlled substance, extortion and impersonating a peace officer. Strange says McDaniel is a former Prattville police officer.

McDaniel is accused of stealing sleep medication from a pharmacy, extorting a man out of an undisclosed amount of money and falsely claiming to be a Prattville Police officer.

McDaniel is free on $17,500 bond and court records filed Wednesday say he has pleaded not guilty. McDaniel’s attorney Jim Norman says he’ll fight the case and work to clear McDaniel’s name.
