NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A man found shot inside a Newark apartment building has died from his wounds, the fifth person to die this week under violent circumstances in New Jersey’s largest city, authorities said Saturday.
Essex County prosecutors say 35-year-old Alim Abdul-Ghafer was found shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday by officers responding to reports of shots fired in the 200 block of Washington Street.
Abdul-Ghafer was unresponsive when police found him in the building’s hallway. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
Further details on the shooting were not disclosed, including what type of weapon was used or how many shooters were involved. A motive remained under investigation. No other injuries were reported, and no arrests had been made.
Abdul-Ghafer’s death occurred the same day that 64-year-old Dario Rodriguez was found stabbed in his apartment in the Ironbound district. Two days earlier, 29-year-old Bashir Edwards died in a shooting in which four other people were wounded.
On Monday, a husband and wife were found dead in their apartment in Upper Clinton Hill. Forty-seven-year-old Felicia Sharpe was strangled, authorities said, while a cause of death was pending on her husband, 48-year-old Juan Silas.
The city’s homicide total stood at 38 at the beginning of the week, according to statistics released by the police department. That was six fewer than on the same date last year.
Last year, there were 93 homicides in Newark. In 2013, the city recorded 111 homicides, the most in the previous six years.
