ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say one man has died and another is hospitalized after a kayaking accident on a lake in Athens.

Athens spokeswoman Holly Hollman said fire and rescue crews were called to Summit Lake on the city’s east side around 6 p.m. Saturday.

Hollman tells WHNT-TV that a 37-year old man was in a kayak that tipped over. Authorities say a 20-year-old man took another kayak out to help the man, but he also fell into the water.

Police Chief Floyd Johnson tells The News Courier that officers and firefighters helped to retrieve both men from the lake.

Johnson says CPR was done on the 37-year-old, but he later died at a hospital. The younger man was taken to Huntsville Hospital. Names of the two men weren’t released.
