NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a New Jersey man abducted his young son at knifepoint, an incident that spurred state police to issue an Amber Alert.

Middlesex County prosecutors say 26-year-old William Merino, of New Brunswick, is charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, making terroristic threats and a weapons offense. Bail has not yet been set, and it’s not known if he has retained an attorney.

Merino’s 9-month-old son was not harmed in the incident, which began around 9:20 a.m. Monday at the New Brunswick home where the child’s mother lives.

The Amber Alert was issued around 10:45 a.m. About 90 minutes later, police say they found Merino and the child sitting on a bench on George Street in New Brunswick.

The child has been returned to his mother.
