QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - Bond has been set at $1 million for an 18-year-old Quincy man charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in a shooting over the July 4th weekend.

Gavin J. Masters is charged in the shooting death of 21-year-old Randy Bowser-Smith of Quincy and the wounding of 21-year-old Skylar L. Osborne, whose condition wasn’t immediately known.

During a Monday hearing, Masters told Adams County Circuit Judge Debra Wellborn he intends to hire his own attorney. Wellborn set his next court appearance for Friday, saying if he hasn’t found a lawyer by that time the court would appoint a public defender to represent him.

The (Quincy) Herald-Whig reports Police Chief Rob Copley said police were not ready to give a motive for the shooting, adding Masters has had previous contact with police.
