WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - A century-old bell that once rang at a Catholic girls school has found a new home at Wheeling Jesuit University.
The 800-pound cast iron bell is on display outside the Center for Educational Technologies, which houses the Mount de Chantal Conservatory of Music. A dedication ceremony for the display was held in late June.
The bell was located in the tower of the former Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy for nearly 145 years. It was manufactured in 1865.
Mount de Chantal was founded in 1848. Its last class graduated in 2008.
Former Mount de Chantal supervisor Sister Joanne Gonter says in Wheeling Jesuit news release that the bell is a large piece of the school’s history.
