PAINESVILLE, Ohio (AP) - A judge has ordered a northeast Ohio woman committed to a psychiatric institution for the stabbing death of her 86-year-old mother last September.

Fifty-six-year-old Dawn Pierce of Mentor was found not guilty by reason of insanity by a judge last month in Lake County. Prosecutors said she stabbed Lillian Pierce dozens of times before killing her cat. Her attorney has said Pierce has suffered from mental illness for years. Prosecutors agreed.

The (Willoughby) News-Herald (https://bit.ly/1ezaEct ) reports that Pierce thanked the judge during Monday’s sentencing hearing and said she hoped to be forgiven someday.

The judge said Pierce believed that she, her mother and the cat were characters in a computer game and wouldn’t die.

The judge will hold periodic evaluation hearings to determine Pierce’s competency.
