NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Police in Newport News say the sawed-off shotgun that a 23-year-old man who was fatally shot by police possessed was reported stolen.

Kawanza Jamal Beaty was shot early Saturday during a foot chase after police said he was seen with a sawed-off shotgun and ignored commands to drop the weapon. On Monday, police said the gun was reported stolen from the neighboring city of Hampton.

The three officers who were involved in the fatal pursuit were placed on paid administrative leave while two separate investigations are conducted.

None of the officers involved in the chase was wearing a body camera at the time of the shooting. Police have promised a transparent investigation. Beaty was black. Police have not released the races of the officers involved.
