PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin says he is saddened by weekend vandalism that hit one of the city’s Roman Catholic churches.

Tobin visited Our Lady of the Rosary Church on Monday. He said the vandalism is “an offense against God and all of the people who come here to worship.” He also said whoever is responsible has forgiveness from God and the church and he hopes they get the help they need.

Police are investigating the Saturday incident. A handmade pulpit was destroyed and rosary beads were taken from statues.

The pastor, the Rev. Joseph Escobar, says among the items taken was a ring belonging to his late mother that he had placed on a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Escobar said he plans to install security cameras at the church.
