PARMA, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old high school junior died while swimming at a suburban Cleveland lake.

Parma Fire Lt. Bryan Downie says a group of Parma Senior High School football players jumped into the lake after practice at around 11 a.m. Monday. Sergey Pivovarnik struggled in the water and went under before his friends could pull him out.

Divers recovered his body just after 1 p.m.

Downie says swimming isn’t allowed in the lake.

School officials say Pivovarnik was scheduled to enroll in the medical program at Normandy High School next year.

Grief counselors will be available at the school on Tuesday morning.
