SAN DIEGO (AP) - A 12-year-old boy is recovering from injuries to his head after being struck by a plane that crashed into a crowded Southern California beach.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1H5Tdbd) that Nicholas Baer suffered a concussion, a gash to his head and a damaged skull in Saturday’s accident at Carlsbad State Beach.

Authorities said a small plane lost engine power while towing a banner and went down on the beach, which was filled with people celebrating the Fourth of July.

The pilot wasn’t hurt.

Nicholas’ parents said their son had been body boarding with his friends and was walking to the sand when he was hit by the propeller.

Doctors at Rady Children’s Hospital said the lining to Nicholas’ brain wasn’t damaged and they expect a full recovery.
