CORINTH, Miss. (AP) - Alcorn County officials have approved a $4.8 million contract for expansion of the Crossroads Regional Park.

The Daily Corinthian reports (https://bit.ly/1UvUXDM ) the contract was awarded Monday by the board of supervisors to Michael Pittman Construction Co. of Corinth. Four other companies submitted bids.

County Engineer Kent Geno says work should begin around Aug. 1.

The expansion includes five new ball fields, new parking, five soccer fields, new restrooms, improvements to the tennis courts, paving of the gravel lot adjacent to the tennis courts, a new playground and sand volleyball courts.

The expansion roughly doubles the size of the park.

Park Director Ray Holloway says he will be looking to the city and county for maintenance funds.

Geno says the project was scaled back slightly to keep within available money.
