FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Allen County Coroner’s office has positively identified a man whose body was pulled from the Maumee River last month as a kayaker who had gone missing.

The coroner’s office said Tuesday that 24-year-old Sean Thomas Hiebel died accidentally from asphyxia caused by drowning.

Hiebel’s body was pulled from the river on June 26, three days after he disappeared after he and two other kayakers were pulled over a dam. The other kayakers made it to shore and were treated. Hiebel’s body was located about three miles downstream.

Search efforts were hampered by the speed of the current following heavy rains.
