BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - Funeral services have been held for Massachusetts Sen. Thomas Kennedy as the governor ordered flags lowered in his honor at state buildings.

The Enterprise of Brockton reports (https://bit.ly/1LUUqIO ) thousands attended Thomas Kennedy’s service Tuesday at St. Edith Stein Church in his hometown of Brockton. Kennedy died last week at 63.

The Rev. Dr. Seamus Finn said in a eulogy that Kennedy was a man of faith and a loyal and generous friend who treated his constituents as if they were members of his family.

Kennedy’s casket was brought to the church on a horse-drawn carriage.

A 1971 accident left Kennedy a quadriplegic and required him to use a wheelchair the rest of his life. He served as a city councilor, state representative and Democratic senator over a 30-plus-year political career.
