CASSVILLE, Mo. (AP) - Heavy rain in southwest Missouri has caused widespread flash flooding in at least one area town.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood watches through Wednesday evening for much of southern Missouri and southeast Kansas. The weather service says rivers and streams are swollen from recent rain and more heavy rainfall is likely through Wednesday.

The Barry County Sheriff’s department told the Joplin Globe (https://bit.ly/1H7LV6D) crews have had to evacuate some Cassville residents and rescue others because of flooding. The sheriff’s department advises people to stay away from Cassville, saying on its Facebook page that “Cassville is CLOSED! Do NOT come to Cassville!”

The Missouri Department of Transportation says several highways and roads are closed because of flooding around Cassville, a town of about 3,000 near the Arkansas border.
