ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) - Authorities say a homemade explosive was discovered by a police officer outside of Pine View High School.

KSL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1J2jV4M ) that St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain says the 6-inch piece of PVC pipe filled with explosives from fireworks had a fuse attached to it, but it was not a threat to anyone or the school.

Members of the bomb squad assessed the situation Monday. They determined the homemade firecracker was explosive and destroyed the device.

Despain says whoever created the device probably used contents of store-bought fireworks and loaded them into the pipe for a louder firework, which is an illegal act.

Police are still investigating who created the explosive and how many there may have been. They found fragments of PVC pipe from at least one other explosive.
