FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - Pinal County authorities say a man who has been deported to Mexico six times in three years is in custody in connection with a serious car accident in Maricopa.

Sheriff’s officials say 29-year-old Manuel Perez-Vasques was driving a vehicle on Saturday afternoon and allegedly struck another car headed in the opposite direction.

They say Perez and at least two other people fled the scene, but Perez returned a short time later.

The other car was occupied by a woman and her two children. The 5-year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital with head injury and the 2-year-old girl was transported by ambulance for undisclosed injuries.

Sheriff’s officials say Perez showed signs of drug impairment and allegedly admitted to officers that he was smoking marijuana prior to the collision.
