CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of an 8-year-old boy who drowned in a central Arizona river.

Yavapai County Sheriff’s officials say the victim was Dimas Mendez of Prescott Valley.

They say the drowning occurred about 4:30 p.m. Saturday at a recreation area southeast of Camp Verde.

Mendez’s uncle told sheriff’s deputies he was carrying the boy on his shoulders while crossing the Verde River. He stepped in a deep hole and they went underwater.

Deputies say the uncle swam to shore and couldn’t reach the boy before he vanished from sight.

The uncle screamed for help and someone nearby called 911.

Rescue and helicopter crews found the boy submerged in 4 feet of water and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say there’s no evidence of foul play.
