WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A 15-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to killing his grandfather last year.

Multiple media outlets reported that Jon Adams of Kernersville pleaded guilty Monday in Winston-Salem to second-degree murder.

Seventy-five-year-old Clarence Nelson Parrish was killed October 18 from blows from a shovel.

Adams was sentenced to between 20 and 25 years in prison.

Adams apologized Monday and said he had no excuse for the crime. He originally was charged with first-degree murder.

Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill said Adams decided to kill Parrish because of his mother’s financial difficulties. O(‘Neill said Adams thought if he killed Parrish his mother would get inheritance.
