BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Burlington’s mayor has appointed a veteran with the New York Police Department to be the city’s new police chief.

Brandon del Pozo has served 18 years with the NYPD, in a number of command-level positions.

Mayor Miro Weinberger says del Pozo del has the experience, education, and perspective to strengthen the department and its ties to the community, and lead the city’s efforts to address new and growing public safety challenges.

The appointment must be approved by the city council.

If approved, he would become chief in September, taking over from Acting Chief Jannine Wright.

Former Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling retired at the end of June.
