MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say two Oregon State Police troopers were deemed justified in the fatal shooting of an assault suspect in Grants Pass.

The Mail Tribune reports (https://is.gd/BO1rlV ) Josephine County District Attorney Ryan Mulkins determined Monday that Gregor Smyth and Heather West were justified under Oregon law in their use of deadly force against Robert Box on May 29.

Smyth and West had been called to Box’s house following a report that Box had assaulted his wheelchair-bound daughter. Mulkins in a new release stated that Box had walked close to the officers with a loaded handgun in his pocket, then pulled it out and pointed it at them.

Smyth and West fired a total of 11 rounds at Box.

Box was taken to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center, where he later died.
