SOMERSET, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania plant that retreads tires for heavy construction and mining vehicles is closing next month, idling 38 union and nonunion workers there.

McCarthy Tire Service Co., which is based in Wilkes-Barre, filed a notice with the state Department of Labor & Industry that its plant in Somerset will close Aug. 17. Somerset is about 65 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

McCarthy’s 60-day closure notice was filed with the state June 17, meaning the workers will lose their jobs on Aug. 17.

McCarthy recently entered an agreement to buy Ragan Tire Group LLC, a North Carolina-based company that provides heavy equipment tire services in the Carolinas and Georgia. That deal is scheduled to close later this month.
