PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Providence man has been indicted in the strangulation death of a 24-year-old woman.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin announced Tuesday that 28-year-old Daniel Tejeda was indicted by a Providence County grand jury on July 2.

Tejeda is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ashley Masi.

Police found Masi’s body in her third-floor apartment on March 31. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say an investigation revealed that Tejeda responded to an advertisement for escort services that Masi posted on website backpage.com.

Tejeda is currently in federal custody on unrelated charges. His arraignment has not yet been scheduled.

It is unclear whether Tejeda is represented by an attorney on the new charge.
