SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County prosecutors say 121 victims of a foreclosure fraud scheme that landed the ringleader behind bars will receive a total of more than $820,000 in restitution.

The district attorney’s office said Tuesday that checks will be distributed this week to victims of the scam perpetrated by William Hutchings and nine co-conspirators. Hutchings was sentenced in 2010 to 46 years in prison.

Prosecutors say Hutchings and others convinced people hoping to avoid foreclosure to turn over grant deeds to their homes in Riverside and San Diego counties. The homeowners - most of whom spoke little English - then rented back their homes from Hutchings or paid $10,000 “land grant” fees. Many wound up losing their homes anyway.
