CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags lowered at all state buildings Thursday in honor of a 37-year-old Navy officer from suburban Detroit who died from noncombat causes while serving aboard an amphibious assault ship.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason P. May of Macomb County’s Chesterfield Township died June 30 while aboard the USS Essex. The Pentagon says the helicopter and landing craft carrier is deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the war on terrorism that began in 2001.

Snyder says Mays served 18 years in the Navy.

May’s funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lee-Ellena Funeral Home in Macomb Township. Visitation is at the home 3-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Survivors include May’s mother Pamela Slanec, father Phillip May and brothers Nathan May, Keith Byrne and Patrick Byrne.
