EDINBURG, Texas (AP) - South Texas police say a 39-year-old man is dead after a domestic violence report led to a three-hour standoff with officers.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon at a house in Edinburg. A neighbor called the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office about 3:30 p.m. to report hearing screaming coming from inside the house.

Edinburg police Lt. Oscar Trevino (treh-VEEN’-yoh) says authorities suspect the man was beating his wife and 13-year-old daughter when officers arrived. The wife managed to escape and the daughter was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

Trevino says the man then locked himself in his bedroom with a rifle and threatened to kill himself. After three hours, the man was dead in what was being investigated as an “officer-involved shooting.” However, it wasn’t clear how he died.
