RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell has established a sister park relationship between Shenandoah National Park and a nature reserve in China.

Jewell established the link between the popular Virginia attraction and the Baihuasan National Nature Reserve as part of a visit to China to promote tourism. She said the arrangement will provide shared lessons and encourage international cooperation.

The Interior Department says approximately 40 percent of the 2.2 million Chinese tourists who visited the U.S. last year included at least one national park or monument in their travels.

Jewell said the Shenandoah National Park and its sister attraction in China share many similarities. Both are about 70 miles from their nation’s capitals and each has similar landscapes.

Shenandoah National Park covers nearly 300 square miles.
