PELHAM, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a driver has died and three other motorists are hospitalized after a tanker truck hauling gasoline collided with another vehicle and caught fire on an Alabama highway.

The tanker truck occupied by two people collided with a Honda, which also carried two motorists, on Highway 11 in Pelham Wednesday morning. Pelham police Lt. David Rushton tells Al.com the driver of the Honda has been pronounced dead.

Police have said the vehicles collided head-on, and gas from the tanker then caught fire. Local media reported that thick, black smoke from the flames could be seen for miles.

Authorities have said they expect the highway near the scene of the crash to be closed until Wednesday evening.

The crash happened about 20 miles south of downtown Birmingham.
