METAIRIE, La. (AP) - A suburban New Orleans sheriff says a deputy chased down an SUV in which the back-seat passenger had one orange-gloved hand on a safe and a pry-bar. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said Tuesday that the driver stopped the car and ran, but child safety locks trapped the passenger.

Normand says 22-year-old Brent Prince was arrested about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. He says the safe had been stolen in a break-in that morning at a Metairie (MET-uh-ree) coffeehouse where surveillance footage showed two men forcing cash registers open.

Normand says the SUV’s owner told investigators that Prince and her boyfriend, 20-year-old Julien Cadis, both of Metairie, had been using her Jeep.

Normand says deputies have a warrant for Cadis’ arrest.

It was unknown if either has an attorney who could comment.
