RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Police say three coyotes followed a Raleigh man walking his dog and then tracked officers as they escorted the man to safety.

Multiple media outlets reported that 24-year-old Steven Keating was walking his dog July 1 when he called 911 to report that three coyotes were following him.

Keating told police he was forced to climb onto a 3-foot elevated manhole until officers arrived.

Police from Raleigh and North Carolina State University responded and found the man and his dog. Officers said the coyotes followed them as they led the man and his dog out of the woods.

Wildlife Resources Commission Lt. Sam Craft says there has never been an unprovoked attack on a human by a coyote in North Carolina. But Craft says people should never turn and run.
