PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A flash flood watch is in effect for southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island as heavy rain is expected to fall in the area.

The National Weather Service in Taunton says showers and scattered thunderstorms in the early afternoon may produce torrential rainfall that could lead to flash flooding, particularly in urban centers, including the Boston and Providence metropolitan areas. Rainfall amounts of 2 inches or more in one hour or less are possible.

The flash flood watch is in effect from 11 a.m. through the evening.

The watch applies to all of Rhode Island and most of southeastern Massachusetts as well as Norfolk and Suffolk counties.
