WHITE RIVER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A natural preservation group is launching a fundraising campaign to buy and protect two acres of Lake Michigan shoreline dunes in western Michigan.

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan and Muskegon County’s White River Township are seeking to raise $970,000 to buy the property. It would become part of the Barrier Dunes Sanctuary.

A December 2014 settlement of a long-running legal dispute calls for the township to buy the land from Bro G Land co. by June 2016. The Muskegon Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1goDZHG ) says backers already have raised $400,000.

A fundraiser is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, July 9 at the Barrier Dunes Sanctuary. The event will include a brief program, guided hike around the sanctuary and a sunset bonfire on the beach.
