LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A proposed bike loop around Lafayette will be named the Mickey Shunick Memorial Bike Loop.

Shunick was a Lafayette resident and University of Louisiana at Lafayette student who was abducted and killed in 2012 while riding her bike.

City-Parish President Joey Durel said the idea of naming a bike trail or a garden at the horse farm park after Mickey Shunick has been tossed around because she loved horses and bicycling.

The Advertiser reports (https://bit.ly/1D0ydRg) the proposed 8-mile loop will begin and end at the horse farm park and include a stretch of St. Landry Street where Mickey Shunick’s bicycle was struck. Brandon Lavergne, her admitted killer, is serving a life sentence at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.
