PLEASANTON, Calif. (AP) - Pleasanton police say an officer shot and killed a 19-year-old man in self-defense because the teenager attacked the officer, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly punched him.

Pleasanton police’s fuller account of the Sunday shooting comes after the parents of John Deming Jr. raised questions about it through attorneys they hired to press the case.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1NN8lOA ) the incident began around 2 a.m. Sunday when officers responded to a burglar alarm at an exotic car showroom in Pleasanton.

Officials say Deming began jumping on top of the cars and screaming before he made his way out of a broken window.

His family counters the police account does not square with a young man who was a dedicated member of his church group and a musician.
