PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Police in Portland say a young man was shot multiple times but is expected to survive gunfire that also sent a bullet into the backpack of a 66-year-old woman who had just alighted from a bus.

In a statement, police said their gang enforcement team is investigating the Tuesday evening shooting in northeast Portland.

Police didn’t find a victim at the shooting scene but about 15 minutes after the gunfire, a young man in his late teens arrived at a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. A police spokesman says the victim is a known gang associate and isn’t cooperating with the investigation.

About an hour after the shooting, the 66-year-old woman called 911 to say she had been walking after getting off a transit bus when she saw one man chasing another, heard gunshots and thought someone was trying to take her backpack.

Officers took a look at the pack and found it had been hit by a bullet. The woman was not injured.

Police are looking for one young man.
