SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The sponsor of a recall petition targeting state Rep. Val Hoyle is dropping the effort.

Jason Thiesfeld says in a statement to the Oregonian (https://bit.ly/1UBuJzR ) that a recall election is unnecessary use of tax dollars. Thiesfeld is a gun store owner who launched the recall effort after Hoyle supported a bill requiring a background check whenever guns are transferred between people who aren’t related.

Hoyle, a Eugene Democrat, said this week she’s exploring a run for secretary of state and will give up her position in legislative leadership.

Three other Democratic lawmakers are facing recall efforts: Sens. Chuck Riley of Hillsboro and Floyd Prozanski of Eugene, and Rep. Susan McLain of Forest Grove.
