MILWAUKEE (AP) - More than 100 people have gathered at a vigil for a 14-year-old boy who police say was fatally shot in a dispute that started with an online fight over a girl.

Police say Tariq Akbar was shot shortly after a nearby fireworks display ended on Milwaukee’s lakefront Friday night. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1Hfe5if ) reports activists spoke at the Tuesday vigil about the need to end violence in the city.

Milwaukee poet Kwabena Antoine Nixon told the crowd that “we got robbed of a young Barack Obama.” Nixon was the keynote speaker when Akbar graduated from eighth grade three weeks ago, and many of Akbar’s classmates were at the vigil.

According to police, Akbar wasn’t involved in the Facebook dispute. A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
