FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A South Florida woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing her longtime, live-in boyfriend.

A Broward County judge sentenced 58-year-old Catherine Marie Pileggi on Tuesday. She was convicted last year of second-degree murder with a firearm. She had faced a possible life sentence.

Authorities say Pileggi shot 70-year-old Ronald Vinci in the head, stabbed him several times and slit his throat at their Fort Lauderdale waterfront home in June 2011. She then wrapped his body in plastic bags and planned to dump him in the ocean.

Pileggi’s attorney argued that she was the victim of long-term abuse and that the killing was a “battered spouse” form of self-defense.
