MARKSVILLE, La. (AP) - The former police chief in a small Avoyelles Parish town remains in jail after being booked in the death of his wife back in March.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/1NVjKfM) Charles Mayeux (my-oo) Jr., the former Evergreen chief, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant charging him with second-degree murder and aggravated arson.

Authorities say the charges stem from a March 21 fire at the home he shared with his wife, Shelly St. Romain Mayeux.

An initial investigation by the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was suspicious.

Mayeux was also booked with six counts of malfeasance and six counts of theft.

His bail has been set at $350,000.

Online jail records do not list an attorney for Mayeux.
