NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - A former teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student has pleaded guilty to simple assault, a misdemeanor.

The Natchez Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1HfIcGn ) 40-year-old Stephanie Adams was indicted on a charge of touching a child for lustful purposes. She pleaded guilty Monday in circuit court.

Judge Forrest “Al” Johnson sentenced Adams to six months but suspended the sentence and placed her on supervised probation for a year. Adams also gave up her teaching credentials.

Authorities say Adams, first-grade teacher at Adams County Christian School, was arrested in July 2014 for allegedly having inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old student between January and May 2014.

Authorities say the relationship was reportedly discovered when the alleged victim’s parents read text messages exchanged between the two.
