MATHEWS, La. (AP) - The Lafourche Parish Council unanimously approved accepting an $8.1 million settlement from BP for the parish’s economic losses stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

The Daily Comet reports (https://bit.ly/1HhFW1f) the decision was made during a special council meeting Wednesday in Mathews.

Parish Administrator Archie Chaisson said forthcoming information will include details about when the parish will receive the money and any stipulations about where the money must be spent.

He says there have been no decisions made about what the money will be used for.

Lafourche’s settlement is part of the $18.7 billion BP agreed to pay last week to Louisiana, four other states, and the federal government to settle lawsuits filed in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
