ONEONTA, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama man is accused of using a hatchet to beat another man to death after a fight over stolen money, authorities said Thursday.

Justin MacNeill, 24, of Cleveland, Alabama, is charged with capital murder in the death of Myron Brian Beavers, 51, authorities said.

MacNeill is accused of beating Beavers with a hatchet Wednesday at the man’s home in Blountsville, stealing $263 and Beavers’ debit card, Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey said.

The prosecutor told WBRC-TV (https://bit.ly/1frzCve ) that MacNeill and a man he was with when he was arrested had used drugs the morning Beavers was killed. There was no evidence that Beavers was also using drugs, Casey said.

State troopers said they were unaware of the killing Wednesday when they tried to pull over the truck on Interstate 59. Authorities said the driver refused to stop, leading officers on a chase. MacNeill was apprehended after spikes were placed on the roadway.

“We definitely didn’t know what we were getting into,” Trooper Chuck Daniel told AL.com (https://bit.ly/1KXSIV8). “One of the men in the truck just coughed up information about the homicide, and we alerted the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. They found the body.”

Beavers’ father, Wilburn Beavers, told WBRC-TV his son studied business at the University of Alabama-Birmingham and eventually became a pilot.

“He was just as humble as he could be and honest as the days are long. He would help anybody,” Beavers’ mother Lounette Beavers told the television station. “He liked to work. He liked doing his yard and he was redoing his house. I never thought about nothing like this happening to him. It’s a sad situation.”

It wasn’t known whether MacNeill had an attorney and details on the relationship between MacNeill and Beavers weren’t immediately available.
