LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A man in custody in an unrelated case has been charged in the murder of a Long Beach man nearly two decades ago.

Long Beach police said Wednesday that the investigation into the 1996 killing of Jorge Martinez was reopened after witnesses recently came forward with new information.

Los Angeles County prosecutors on Tuesday charged 40-year-old Wayne Taufi with murder. He is being held at county jail and it wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.

Investigators say the 26-year-old Martinez was shot May 4, 1996 by Taufi, who was a member of a Samoan street gang.

Detectives are seeking to gather information on four other men who were present at the scene of the killing. Police say those men went by the monikers Wizard, Lil Boy, Fuzzy and Whisper.
